Qual’è la connessione tra arte e rivoluzione? E’ l’arte che segue la
rivoluzione o viceversa?
Secondo Vilém Flusser la società mediatica sta andando verso un mutamento
radicale del processo culturale, verso una “catastrofe culturale”, che però
dall’altra parte porterà con sé la possibilità di creare nuovi immaginari:
“non esiste niente di nuovo prima della catastrofe, solo dopo”.
L’Italia ha decisamente bisogno di nuovi immaginari – e quindi di una tale
catastrofe o una rivoluzione.
Se l’arte sarà capace di innescare una rivoluzione sarà dovuto al fatto
che, attraverso le loro opere, gli artisti sono ingrado di allargare la
nostra percezione del mondo e farci vedere delle cose note da prospettive
nuove, sconosciute o inconsuete, incoraggiandoci non solo a valutare le
cose e gli eventi intorno a noi sempre da capo, ma anche a reagire ed
agire, a prendere le cose in mano. Senza azione non può esserci
rivoluzione, e la rivoluzione ormai non è più pensabile senza il medium di
internet – basti pensare alla recente rivoluzione studentesca in Austria o
agli attuali accadimenti in Tunisia, Egitto o Libia.
Allora, mettiamo insieme queste premesse per una rivoluzione – arte e
internet – e lasciamo questo mix far effetto: vedendo, creando, giocando e
interagendo per far nascere nuovi immaginari – forse basta un click del
mouse.
Formato dello SPEED SHOW:
Scegli un internet-café, affitta tutti i computer di cui dispone e fà una
mostra per una notte. Tutte le opere degli artisti partecipanti devono
essere online (non necessariamente pubbliche) e essere visibili in un
tipico browser con i plug-in standard. Opere performative o in diretta
possono usare dei programmi di comunicazione pre-istallati (instant
messaging, VOIP, video chat etc.). I software istallati appositamente
(eccetto browser add-ons) o file off-line non sono permessi. Non è permessa
nessuna modificazione creativa fisica dell’Internet-café. La mostra è
pubblica e si svolge durante gli orari regolari dell’Internet-café. Tutti i
visitatori sono benvenuti a partecipare all’opening, godersi l’arte (e
controllare le loro mail).

Curatorial statement:
What is the relation between art and revolution? Does art follow
revolution, or the other way round?
According to Vilém Flusser the interconnectedness of society caused by the
new media will lead to a radical change in the cultural process, a
“cultural catastrophe”, which on the other hand will bring along the
possibility of creating a new imagery: “there is nothing new before the
catastrophe, only afterwards”.
Italy definitely needs a new imagery – and thus a revolution or a
catastrophe. If art is capable to trigger off a revolution, it is due to
the fact that through their works artists are able to augment our
perception of the world and show us familiar things from new or unusual
perspectives, encouraging us not only to evaluate things and events around
us always anew, but also to react and act, to take charge of things.
Without action there is no revolution, and today you can’t think of
revolution without the use of the internet – as seen during the recent
student-revolutions starting in Austria or the actual happenings in Egypt,
Tunisia or Lybia.
So let’s put together these premises of revolution – art and internet – and
let’s take this mix it’s effect: looking, creating, playing and interacting
to give birth to new imageries – maybe they are just one mouse-click ahead.
The SPEED SHOW exhibition format:
Hit an Internet-cafe, rent all computers they have and run a show on them
for one night. All art works of the participating artists need to be on-
line (not necessarily public) and are shown in a typical browser with
standard plug-ins. Performance and life pieces may also use pre-installed
communication programs (instant messaging, VOIP, video chat etc). Custom
software (except browser add-ons) or off-line files are not permitted.
Any creative physical modification to Internet cafe itself is not allowed.
The show is public and takes place during normal opening hours of the
Internet cafe/shop. All visitors are welcome to join the opening, enjoy the
art (and to check their email.)
