SITEMAP:
THOUGHTS
ON
THE
INTERNET
by
Jordan
Tate
Following
the
notion
of
the
endless
scroll,
one
is
presented
with
a
constantly
evolving
yet
contemporaneous
presentation
of
the
aggregate
identity
of
a
digital
hoarder.
I
do
not
use
this
term
pejoratively;
rather,
I
find
this
strategy
an
appropriate
and
remarkably
adept
use
of
the
internet
as
a
platform
for
organizational
and
archival
utility.
As
an
organizational
structure,
the
internet
presents
options
that
enable
cohesive,
archived,
yet
still
ephemeral
phenomena
(imagine
versioning
your
space
IRL
and
reverting
to
a
previous
date
with
precise
locations
of
all
detritus
in
its
appropriate
place).
EXTERIOR
SCROLLS
in
this
context
functions
as
a
meta-aggregator
by
presenting
a
platform
of
collection
and
aesthetic
research
that
functions
outside
the
bounds
(with
this
text
being
the
exception)
of
text.
There
have
been
a
wealth
of
discussions
on
the
implications
and
direction
of this
type
of
process
under
the
#keyword
The
New
Aesthetic,
but
implicit
in
these
discussions
are
necessarily
the
idea
that
the
images
are
(or
should
be)
the
result
rather
than
the
research.
This
logic
is
couched
within
the
framework
of
historical
aesthetic
movements
whereby
the
aesthetics
were
often
the
product
of
a
politic.
Technology
(in
the
broadest
sense)
and
the
internet
provide
us
with
multiple
intriguing
structures
for
imagining
(and
imaging)
research
in
a
new
fashion.
We
have
the
capability
(or
mission,
whichever
gets
you
more
excited)
to
network
research
in
ways
that
we
were
previously
unable
to,
and
Tumblr
creates
a
platform
where
the
research
(virtually
always
aesthetic)
is
validated
by
the
virtue
of
publication
(posting)
and
peer
review
(likes/reblogs).
Through
a
fluent
application
of
media,
these
artist/researchers
have
shifted
the
discourse
from
what
is
it
about,
to
what
is
it,
and
allow
us
all
to
consider
the
power
of
aesthetic
research
in
the
expanded
field.
